  • Next step: Endorse! Comments are fleeting. Endorsements last. When former or current colleagues say something positive about your skills, leadership, or mentorship, it's not for a pat on the back. It's a career booster. Why do endorsements matter? ✔️ For Credibility: A good endorsement from a former manager, co-worker, or protege validates your achievements and skills. 💥 For Impact: Narratives illustrate how you've helped others succeed and highlight your value as a team member or leader. People remember stories. 🥇 For Distinction: In today's competitive employment market, real-life and genuine endorsements set you apart from other candidates. So, my challenge to you: 🧠 Reflect: Who was your best favorite manager? What did they do that made such a significant positive impression on you? ✍ Act: If you haven't, take a minute to give them a LinkedIn recommendation or endorsement. It's a small action that can make a huge difference. ❓ Request: If you supported team members or mentees through your leadership or mentorship, don't hesitate to ask for an endorsement. It's not bragging. It's building and sharing your professional story. Is your LinkedIn profile part of your job search strategy? If not, I’m here to help. Let’s work together to create a manageable strategy to showcase your value in your applications and on LinkedIn, and land your next role. Who’s Your Favorite Supervisor? Let them know! Make their day. Recently, a former team member—who was once an intern on my team—reached out to me to share something that made my day. They’re on the job market, and in one of their interviews, the recruiter asked, “Tell me about your favorite supervisor.” Instead of citing their former faculty supervisor, or other managers with whom they worked, they cited me as their example. 💖 This got me thinking: What makes a supervisor memorable? Is it their ability to inspire? Their willingness to mentor? Or simply the way they valued and supported you? I’d love to hear from you: 👉 Who was your favorite supervisor, and why? 👉 What did they do that made such a positive impact on you? Whether it’s a manager who championed your growth, a leader who trusted you with big opportunities, or someone who just made work feel like a team effort, let’s celebrate the people who’ve shaped our careers for the better. Make their day, or their weekend! Drop your stories in the comments. I can’t wait to read them! #Leadership #CareerGrowth #Mentorship #Teamwork #FavoriteSupervisor #CareerCoach

I Ain’t Afraid of No Ghost (Job) Learn the signs to avoid them. I recently mentioned the term “ghost job” to three of my clients, all of whom hadn’t heard the term before. I can’t imagine they’re the only ones, so what are ghost jobs? Ghost jobs are positions advertised with no intent to hire. The reasons companies do this range from simple oversight to nefarious, such as illusory appearances of growth to external applicants or current employees. According to Greenhouse’s 2024 State of Job Hunting: https://lnkd.in/gJE_es_d “Three in five candidates say they suspect they’ve encountered a ghost job. And Greenhouse data shows this phenomenon isn’t just in candidates’ heads. In any given quarter, 18–22% of the jobs posted on the Greenhouse platform are classified as ghost jobs.” So, how do you spot the ghosts and avoid wasting your time? Here are some ghost job red flags: 👻 Posted for 30+ days: If a job has been listed for 30+ days with no updates, it’s likely a ghost job. 🔥 Advice: Verify! Cross-reference a posting with Google and sites that have a posting timestamp. Not all companies display posting dates on their career sites, but the internet knows! 👻 Reposted Listings: If the same job is reposted repeatedly, it is likely a ghost. They're not having trouble, they're collecting resumes. 🔥 Advice: Verify more! Some job sites (like here) will indicate if a position was reposted and when. 👻 Only Listed on Third-Party Sites: If you can only find a job posting on third-party sites – not on the company website – it is likely fake. 🔥 Advice: Do not apply. Protect your information. 👻 Generic or Vague Details: If the posting lacks specific details about responsibilities, qualifications, or the team, it might not be a real role. 🔥 Advice: Reach out to current employees on LinkedIn to investigate if they’re truly recruiting for the role. Be strategic in your search to help you avoid ghost jobs: 👉 Research the Company: Look for recent news, company financial health reports, and hiring trend data. Growing companies are more likely to have real openings. Use reviews on job sites for mentions of poor hiring practices or ghost jobs. 👉 Network Intentionally: Reach out to your network and to company employees to ask about a role. If it’s real, they’ll often know—or can point you to someone who does. 👉 Apply Through Referrals: If you know someone at the company, ask them to refer you. Referred candidates are more likely to get interview invitations, and less likely to fall into the ghost job trap. 👉 Follow Up: If you haven’t heard back after applying, send a polite follow-up email to the hiring manager or recruiter. No response? Move on. 👉 Trust Your Intuition: If something feels off about the posting or the company, it’s okay to walk away. Your time and energy are valuable. Share Your Story: Talking about ghost jobs raises awareness and holds companies accountable.

  • Master Your Resume Strategy to Land Your Next Role If you’re on the job market, whether by choice or from a recent layoff, you may feel the urge to “application dump”—applying en masse to jobs out of the desire to find work quickly or to close the employment gap. The truth is this is often counter-productive. Scattering generic resumes everywhere is a recipe for burnout and missed opportunities. Instead, use a Primary Resume and Working Resume strategy. Let me break it down for you: What’s a Primary Resume? Your Primary Resume is your template document. It’s a comprehensive, detailed record of your skills, accomplishments, and experiences. Think of it as your unabridged career archive. Here’s how to create one: ✔️ Include Everything: List every role, project, and achievement relevant to your career goals and to the type of positions you want. ✔️ Quantify Your Impact: Use numbers, percentages, and tangible outcomes to showcase your contributions. ✔️ Organize by Theme: Group your experiences (e.g., leadership, research, program management) to make it easy to tailor later. What’s a Working Resume? Your Working Resume is the tailored version of your Primary Resume, customized for a specific job application. Instead of starting from scratch every time, duplicate your primary resume, then: ✔️ Pull Relevant Sections: Select your experiences, accomplishments, and skills that align with the job description. Remove the rest. ✔️ Mirror the Job Posting: Edit to include keywords and phrases from the job ad to make your resume friendly to application tracking systems (ATS). ✔️ Focus on Impact: Highlight the sections and accomplishments that matter most for the specific role, prioritizing them for the first page or for the first spots in lists. Why This Strategy Works ⏲️ Saves Time: Shifting from synthesis to editing for each application can cut down application time significantly. 📈 Boosts Confidence: Having more time to evaluate a job description helps you clearly see how your skills and experiences align with the role. This clarity makes it easier to communicate your qualifications confidently in your application and interviews. 🧯 Reduces Burnout: You’ll feel more in control and less overwhelmed. 💯 Increases Success: Tailored resumes stand out to recruiters, hiring managers, and ATS systems, boosting your chances of landing interviews. Feeling Overwhelmed? I’m Here to Help. Crafting a strong Primary Resume and learning how to tailor it effectively can be challenging—but you don’t have to do it alone. I can guide you through the process and help you create a resume and job search strategy that works. Let’s chat!
